Real Milk Paint
Product Overview
Real Milk Paint® isn’t just a “look”—it’s a traditional chemistry of milk protein (casein), lime, and natural earth pigments. Unlike “milk-style” acrylics or latex paints that sit on top of a surface as a plastic film, our paint binds deep into the fibers of porous surfaces. This creates a finish that won’t chip or peel in sheets, but rather wears gracefully over time, making it the premier choice for authentic antique restoration and high-end furniture design.
- 100% Organic & VOC-Free Formula: CPSC-compliant, food-contact safe, and biodegradable.
- Unique Powdered Format: Ships light, won’t freeze, and lasts 3+ years on the shelf.
- High-Adhesion Formula: Naturally bonds to porous surfaces or any surface with Ultra-Bond.
- Fully Customizable: Adjust water ratio for washes, dry-mix colors for custom hues, and layer for effortless distressing.
- Integrated Product System: Designed to work seamlessly with our Wood Oils, Topcoats, and Waxes.
One SKU, Infinite Finishes
Real Milk Paint® allows your customers to achieve the exact look they envision. Because our milk paint comes in powder form, it creates the space for:
- Adjustable Opacity: Mix 1:1 for a rich paint, or increase water to create a vibrant wood stain/wash.
- Intermixable: Colors can be dry-mixed in powder form to create repeatable, custom signature tints.
- Substrate Range: While it bonds naturally to porous surfaces like wood and stone, adding Ultra-Bond allows it to stick to metal, glass, and previous finishes.

The “Profit Multipliers”
Real Milk Paint® is designed to work with many of the other products in the RMP Finishes lineup. This makes it a natural flow to sell other products as complementary to the milk paint. To ensure customer success and higher margins, we typically recommend:
- The Necessary Sealant: Because the paint is naturally breathable, it requires a topcoat for liquid resistance. Upsell a wood oil like Pure Tung Oil and Hemp Oil or Furniture Wax.
- The Bonding Agent: If the customer is painting a non-porous surface (like a laminate or a previously painted piece), ensure they add Ultra-Bond to their first coat.
- The Aesthetic Add-on: Suggest our color Furniture Wax variants to highlight decorative areas or create an antique look instantly.
Application & Mixing Guide
Real Milk Paint® is a living finish. Because it arrives in a traditional powdered format, the user has total control over the paint’s body and behavior. Follow these steps for a professional-grade result.
The Mixing Process (The 1:1 Rule)
- Standard Ratio: Combine 1 part water with 1 part Real Milk Paint® powder.
- The Procedure: For best results, add water to the powder in a mixing container. Shake, stir, or whisk for 2–3 minutes. Gentle stirring is best, and fast agitation can “froth” the paint.
- The “Wait” Rule: Let the mixture sit for 15–30 minutes. This allows the milk proteins (casein) and lime to fully dissolve and activate.
- Final Stir: Give the paint one last gentle stir to incorporate any remaining pigments. If foam is present, a few drops of our Anti-Foam will instantly clear the surface.
Surface Preparation
- Raw Wood/Porous Surfaces: No primer is needed. Ensure the surface is free of dust, oils, or wax.
- Non-Porous Surfaces (Glass, Metal, Paint): Add Ultra-Bond to your first coat of mixed paint. This ensures a permanent mechanical bond to surfaces that would otherwise repel a water-based finish.
Application Techniques
- Brushing: Use a high-quality synthetic or natural bristle brush. Real Milk Paint® is not self-leveling and dries quickly; work in manageable sections. More, thinner coats are better than a single heavy coat.
- Spraying: For high-volume professional use, strain the mixed paint through a fine mesh filter and use a 2.0mm tip or larger on an HVLP system.
- The “Wash” Look: For a transparent stain effect, simply double the amount of water in your initial mix.
- The “Uh Oh” Moment: Drips, spills, and accidental strokes happen to even the best. With milk paint, it’s easy to reverse those by wiping them away with a damp cloth. The sooner the mistake is caught the better!
Finishing & Sealing
Real Milk Paint® dries to a beautiful, velvety matte finish that is naturally porous. To protect the color from oils and water, it must be sealed.
- For Maximum Durability: Apply a wood oil, such as Pure Tung Oil, Half & Half, or Outdoor Defense Oil for exterior projects. Note: this will darken the color of the milk paint.
- For Ease Of Use: Use our Furniture Wax for a soft, water-resistant luster that won’t change the color of the paint.
- For The Customer Who Knows What They Want: The great thing about Real Milk Paint® is it plays well with nearly all topcoats and sealants. Your customer can use their preferred finish to seal milk paint without worry.
